Set off on The Three Lakes Bike Tour, a captivating cycling journey through the heart of the Alps' scenic landscapes and historical towns. Beyond being a regular cycling adventure, these four days will introduce you to Switzerland and France through time and nature.

The vibrant city of Geneva offers a unique blend of international flair besides its picturesque setting of Lake Geneva. Furthermore, the Rhône River adds its charms with surrounding vineyards and the serene countryside.

The historic spa town of Aix-les-Bains on the shores of Lake Bourget, France's largest natural lake, is next in line with this tour’s notable locations. The region’s natural beauty is unparalleled, characterized by opportunities to delve into its rich history with a ride through Chambéry, the heart of Savoy.

Upon reaching Annecy, known for its pristine lake, you will experience the authentic alpine culture and architecture. The town's rich history and charming canals are the main reasons Annecy was dubbed the Venice of the French Alps.

The tour is suited for cyclists with a great fitness level, offering rewarding riding along paved roads. Even though you will experience only four full cycling days, the daily length of stages and remarkable elevation levels present the real challenge here.

We take care of every logistical detail so you can focus on the adventure ahead. All your accommodations and luggage transfers are pre-booked, while we provide a digital guidebook with recommendations and GPS routes to ensure you never miss a turn.

If you ever need assistance, our round-the-clock support team is just a phone call away.

It is a journey that combines cycling with cultural immersion, set against some of alpine Europe’s most stunning backdrops.

Top Places You'll See

From natural wonders to authentic local culture, the route is packed with memorable sights—these are our absolute favorites.

Water jet fountain with rainbow in Geneva

Geneva

Set on the western tip of Lake Geneva, the city is framed by the Alps and Jura mountains. The Jet d’Eau fountain shoots water 140 meters into the air, while the Old Town is home to St. Pierre Cathedral, dating to the 12th century. Known as a hub of diplomacy, Geneva hosts over 200 international organizations, including the United Nations.

View of Seyssel in Switzerland on a warm spring day

Seyssel

Straddling both banks of the Rhône River, Seyssel is one of the oldest river ports in the Savoy region. Its arched stone bridge was first built in the 14th century and later rebuilt in 1837, linking the two sides of town. Seyssel is also known for its sparkling white wine, produced from vineyards that stretch across the surrounding hills.

Scenic view of thermal spa town Aix-les-Bains with lakes and mountains

Aix-les-Bains

This lakeside spa town sits on the shores of Lake Bourget, the largest natural lake in France at 44 square kilometers. Famous since Roman times for its thermal springs, Aix-les-Bains developed into a fashionable Belle Époque resort in the 19th century, with grand villas and ornate bathhouses. Today, it combines wellness traditions with outdoor activities on lake and mountain trails.

Annecy old town cityscape and Thiou river view and bridge

Annecy

Known as the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy is famed for its canals, pastel-colored houses, and alpine lake. Lake Annecy, fed by mountain springs, is considered the cleanest lake in Europe, stretching 14 kilometers in length. Overlooking the town is the Château d’Annecy, a castle dating to the 12th century, now a museum showcasing Savoyard history.

Bourget lake and mountains

Lake Bourget

Encircled by wooded hills and limestone cliffs, Lake Bourget is the largest natural lake in France at 18 kilometers long. It has been celebrated in literature and art, most famously by the poet Alphonse de Lamartine in 1820. Today the lake is popular for swimming, sailing, and cycling along its scenic shores, with the Alps reflected in its calm waters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Self-guided cycling tours provide a personalized and flexible approach to cycling holidays. You can explore at your own pace and adapt your route or schedule as you see fit. Our team arranges all details, such as logistics, accommodations, detailed itineraries, GPS routes, and 24/7 support. Thus, you can enjoy a stress-free, immersive experience that offers independence, customization, and authentic encounters with local culture.

Our tours are rated on a difficulty scale from 1 to 5 to help you choose the right adventure:

1/5 – Short daily distances of approximately 30 km. Easy, flat terrain suitable for everyone, including those with no prior sports experience.

2/5 – Daily distances of up to 40 km. Some light uphill sections, up to 200 m, but not every day. Suitable for anyone in good health.

3/5 – Daily distances around 50 km. Daily altitude gains of up to 500 m. On days with less altitude, distances may be longer. Ideal for recreational cyclists in good physical condition.

4/5 – Daily distances of 60 km or more. Daily altitude gains of 400 m or more, with some stages reaching up to 1000 m. Designed for well-prepared amateur cyclists who are comfortable with uphill riding.

5/5 – Challenging stages with steep climbs and long distances. Suitable for experienced road cyclists seeking a demanding adventure along with breathtaking scenery.

We continuously strive to find the perfect fit for you. We work with multiple accommodation providers that meet our standards, but their availability can vary, especially during peak season. We can also tailor your holiday according to your preferences and budget, ensuring we find the most suitable solution for your taste.

We recommend booking as early as possible. Many of our tours pass through popular tourist destinations with limited accommodation options. The best-selling tours are often fully booked for the summer before spring arrives.

The ease of accommodating dietary restrictions depends on their severity. Vegetarian options are usual in Switzerland, but vegan dishes can be challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Please note that lunch stops are often at traditional establishments that may struggle to cater to special requests outside their standard menu. Keep this in mind during your trip.

Generally, late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are the ideal times for cycling, depending on the tour. Summer is also a fantastic choice because Switzerland has a milder climate, especially in the Alps.

Most tours can proceed even in light rain, provided you dress appropriately. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the peak months of summer, so early starts are recommended. If the weather appears to be particularly unfavorable, we can adjust the tour beforehand. You will be in contact with our support in case last-minute changes are necessary.

Our tours cater to different cycling preferences, whether you prefer road, gravel, or mountain biking. Our cycling experts will consider your experience, preferences, and group dynamics to provide tailored recommendations. Additionally, e-bikes are always an option. If there’s a significant difference in fitness levels among group members, some can choose an e-bike while others opt for a regular bike.

The most versatile option is a gravel bike, even if you are coming on a road cycling holiday. Gravel bikes maintain excellent road performance while allowing you to explore scenic backroads that may be less maintained than main routes. They also tend to offer greater comfort, enhancing your overall experience.

Walking Holidays Slovenia is great! They provided all of the information and made the arrangements for our self guided walk in Triglav National Park. We hiked to Vodnikov Dom the first day, then to the Seven Lakes Basin the second day, then back to Ribcev Laz the third day. The trails were well marked, and the GPS app recommended by Walking Holidays Slovenia was very helpful for keeping us on track. The trails were very rocky in places, which was a bit of a challenge for us, but it was so beautiful! Very much recommend this company!

We had an incredible time on the 5 day hut to hut hike in Croatia. The views were perfect, the accommodation much nicer than we imagined and we had a fantastic support guide - Ivan - who was very friendly and made the whole trip possible. We were also able to go to the beach most days after we finished our hiking and everything was very flexible. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

1) Stunningly beautiful places with perfect weather! Good balance of countryside and old city walking. 2) The Trip App was incredible!!! 5 stars! Loved the write ups on each location. The links to all restaurants, hotels, attractions, tickets! The GPS app also worked. 3) PERFECTLY located hotels and rooms with two beds and thoughtful staff! Loved being right in the old towns with amazing views. I did not mind carrying bags up or down in order to have the locations but much appreciated when we did have help with this 4) Breakfast being included with the rooms (even though there was a mix up the first morning). I don't like to have to plan breakfast spots and the buffets were incredible. 5) The kindness and promptness of the drivers, Nice transport vehicles and easy drop off and pick up points. Plus help with our bags. 6) The Walking Holidays Croatia team was helpful and easy to work with. We appreciate all they did to customize out trip.
